The water for Lausanne and 17 of its surrounding municipalities –  in sum a total of 235’000 people – mainly comes from treated lake water. A total capacity of 30 million cubic meters per year is consumed. To put that in perspective, that are 0.951 cubic meters (=951 liters) per second.

55 percent of the drinking water comes from Lac Léman, and 18% form Lac de Bret. The remaining 27% is collected from 120 different sources, located between the Jura, Gros-de-Vaud and the Pre-Alps.

High-quality water treatment

The water of Lac Leman is treated in the water treatment plants of Lutry and Saint-Sulpice, whereas the water of Lac de Bret is processed in the Lac de Bret treatment facility.

Since summer of 2013, the water of the springs from Pays d’Enhaut is treated in the Sonzier plant.

Approximately 200 employees of Service de l’eau work 24/7 to ensure a high water quality. There responsibilities include the collection, the treatment, the control as well as water distribution and protection.
