Drinking Water in St. Gallen
In St. Gallen, St. Galler Stadtwerke AG (SGSW) ensures the drinking water supply for the city and surrounding municipalities. The water quality is regularly tested by independent laboratories and meets the strict requirements of the Swiss Drinking Water Ordinance.
Protecting sources and waterways plays a central role. SGSW relies on sustainable water protection to guarantee long-term supply security. In addition, the company operates three wastewater treatment plants that ecologically treat and return wastewater to the natural cycle.
Water Quality in St. Gallen
Drinking water in St. Gallen is sourced predominantly from protected springs and is treated using mechanical and chemical processes as well as UV disinfection. These methods reliably eliminate pathogens and unwanted residues.
Comprehensive monitoring systems, complemented by sampling and laboratory analyses, ensure consistently high quality. SGSW publishes results transparently on their website.
Residents can consume the water without concern. It tastes neutral, is odorless and clear—a testament to the high treatment and supply standards.
Water Abstraction in St. Gallen
The most important abstraction plant is the “Wasserschloss” St. Gallen-Winkeln facility, commissioned in 1989. It supplies around 140 000 people with high-quality deep groundwater from about 200 m depth.
The plant has been modernized several times and now operates with state-of-the-art technology. Additional abstraction sites in the region—such as in Trogen or Flums—supplement the supply and are centrally coordinated by SGSW.
By combining various water sources, modern infrastructure, and regular quality assurance, St. Gallen offers a stable, secure, and sustainable water supply for residents and businesses.
