Product information "Water Analysis Bacteria Plus"
With the Water Analysis Bacteria Plus, you can have your drinking water tested for five microbiological parameters: the total viable count at 22 °C and 36 °C, Escherichia coli (E. coli), coliform bacteria and enterococci. The laboratory analysis provides important information about the microbiological quality of your drinking water.
Compared with the standard Bacteria Water Test, the Water Analysis Bacteria Plus also includes testing for enterococci. This provides a more comprehensive microbiological assessment of your water.
Why is testing drinking water for bacteria useful?
In Switzerland, drinking water is regularly monitored and is generally of very good quality. Nevertheless, contamination can occur in the water distribution system or household plumbing. Microbiological testing can also be useful for private water supplies.
Bacteria can enter water through external contamination, leaking pipes or poorly maintained installations. In areas where water stagnates, such as rarely used sections of pipework, certain microorganisms may multiply under suitable conditions.
Targeted testing helps you identify potential microbiological abnormalities and determine whether further investigation is necessary.
When is the Water Analysis Bacteria Plus recommended?
- When you want a more comprehensive assessment of the microbiological quality of your tap water
- If you suspect contamination in your household plumbing
- After prolonged periods of non-use or in rarely used water pipes
- For private wells or springs used as a water supply
- When you also want your water tested for enterococci
Which five parameters does the Water Analysis Bacteria Plus examine?
The Water Analysis Bacteria Plus covers five selected microbiological parameters. These help assess the general hygienic condition of the water and identify possible contamination.
Total viable count at 22 °C
The total viable count at 22 °C provides information about the general microbiological characteristics of the water. It indicates how many microorganisms grow at this incubation temperature under specified laboratory conditions.
Total viable count at 36 °C
The total viable count at 36 °C complements the examination at 22 °C. Both measurements help assess the general hygienic condition of the water. They do not identify individual bacterial species.
Escherichia coli (E. coli)
Escherichia coli (E. coli) are bacteria naturally found in the intestines of humans and animals. Their detection in drinking water indicates faecal contamination. While most strains are harmless, certain strains can cause illness.
Coliform bacteria
Coliform bacteria are important indicators of the microbiological quality of drinking water. Some species can cause gastrointestinal problems. If coliform bacteria are detected, the cause of the contamination should be investigated.
Enterococci
Enterococci are found, among other places, in the intestines of humans and animals. They serve as indicators of faecal contamination in drinking water. Because they are relatively resistant in the environment, they may also provide evidence of contamination that occurred some time ago.
Frequently asked questions about the Water Analysis Bacteria Plus
What is the difference between Bacteria and Bacteria Plus?
The Bacteria Water Test examines four microbiological parameters: the total viable count at 22 °C and 36 °C, E. coli and coliform bacteria. The Water Analysis Bacteria Plus additionally includes enterococci, providing an extended microbiological examination.
Why are enterococci tested in drinking water?
Enterococci serve as indicators of possible faecal contamination. Testing for them complements the detection of E. coli and provides additional information about the hygienic quality of the water.
What does an elevated total viable count in drinking water mean?
An elevated total viable count may indicate changes in the microbiological characteristics of the water, for example due to stagnation or changes in operating conditions. It does not automatically mean that the water contains pathogens. The assessment depends on the parameter tested and the circumstances.
Does the Water Analysis Bacteria Plus also detect Legionella?
No. The Water Analysis Bacteria Plus covers five microbiological parameters but does not include Legionella. A separate test is required to detect Legionella.
Have your drinking water tested for bacteria and enterococci
With the Water Analysis Bacteria Plus, you receive laboratory results for five selected microbiological parameters. These help you better assess the microbiological quality of your water and determine whether further investigation is necessary.
Note: The Water Analysis Bacteria Plus examines only the five microbiological parameters listed above. Other pathogens, Legionella and chemical contaminants are not included. The results alone therefore do not confirm the overall quality of your drinking water.
