Water Quality in the Canton of Geneva

The water quality in the Canton of Geneva meets the high requirements set for drinking water. Every three years, the relevant data is submitted to the WHO environmental health organization for review.
The excellent water quality of Lake Geneva
As the main supplier of drinking water, Lake Geneva is the most important resource for supplying over half a million people in the Canton of Geneva and neighboring France.
The international French-Swiss commission CIPEL (Commission Internationale pour la Protection des Eaux du Léman) continuously monitors the ecological development of Lake Geneva as well as the Rhône and its tributaries.
Switzerland extracts about one billion cubic meters of drinking water annually. In the Canton of Geneva, Lake Geneva provides over 80 million cubic meters of this. The water is taken from spring water, groundwater, rivers, and lakes and carefully treated depending on its origin to meet legal requirements.
✪ The drinking water in the Canton of Geneva flows pure and clear from the tap. This is ensured by local water suppliers who strictly adhere to legal quality standards. Treatment is carried out either physically using UV radiation and filtration or chemically with chlorine or ozone.
✪ In addition to the voluntary self-controls by suppliers, water quality in the Canton of Geneva is also regularly checked by cantonal water inspectors through sample tests.
✪ The water is taste-neutral, clear, cool, and free from unpleasant odors. It contains no harmful germs. The mineral concentration varies regionally but remains within a natural and healthy range. Drinking water can be consumed daily without hesitation.
